Program Overview As you review training opportunities in surgery, we invite you to consider the Iowa Methodist Medical Center program in Des Moines, a premier community hospital-based residency. Our program offers a unique blend of surgical training opportunities. While anchored at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, a large tertiary care hospital, our residents also receive training at an active county hospital medical center, a Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, and have the opportunity for a novel rotation in rural surgery at the senior level. This mix provides a variety of patient care opportunities as well as a diverse faculty committed to teaching and academic excellence. As our residents progress through the program, they are exposed to a wide variety and large number of surgical procedures in both inpatient and ambulatory settings. Our program prides itself in early operative experience, progressive resident autonomy and flexibility tailored to meet individual career needs. We also provide ample opportunity for research pursuits. The surgery faculty is strongly committed to graduating well-qualified individuals to be respected for clinical excellence throughout their careers. We share values of caring, respect, integrity and commitment to excellence in patient care and teaching. Should you become a resident in our program, your five years of residency will be marked by diverse training opportunities in a caring environment. We also offer two one-year preliminary positions each year, which provide excellent experience and preparation for further training in other specialties. As you continue pursuit of a graduate training program in general surgery, we invite you to consider the opportunities offered by Iowa Methodist Medical Center, and would welcome the opportunity to visit with you further about our residency.
